Did you know the closest library to Oakwood & Mordecai Community is the Richard B. Harrison Library? It has been renovated and the Grand Opening is today. Below is a link to information on it. http://www.wakegov.com/libraries/about/projects/default.html It's a hidden treasure that I hope Oakwood & Mordecai Community will embrace. If they don't have the book you are looking for it can always be requested and sent to this location. If you think of a title you want to read and can't get to the library you can go online with your library card and pin number to request the book 24 hours a day. The Richard B. Harrison Library is a hidden treasure that I hope Oakwood will embrace. Post by Kerri Hall |

Congratulations to Philip Bernard, Raleigh 2011 Neighborhood Recognition Award Recipient, for developing the Person Street Partnership.
Philip Bernard has been nominated by community leaders of the Mordecai CAC for his development of the Person Street Partnership. Philip will be recognized among other award-winners throughout the city this Wednesday, Oct 19, at the McKimmon Center.
Everyone wants to see great things happen with the business district along North Person Street in the north-end of downtown Raleigh. This business district is adjacent to thriving neighborhoods like Historic Oakwood and the Mordecai Community, but development has been slow for numerous reasons . One person in our community has taken the time to bring property owners, business owners, stakeholders, residents, and Raleigh City Staff together to work jointly on creating a vibrant business community on Person Street.
Philip Bernard formed the Person Street Partnership in March of 2011, after facilitating a successful kick off meeting with over fifty people attending. This first meeting focused on inviting business and property owners on Person Street along with representatives from stakeholders in the area including Blount Street Commons, Peace College, Historic Oakwood, and Mordecai CAC. The attendees recognized this as a great start to building momentum on Person Street.
Since March of 2011, Philip has continued to facilitate a total of three partnership meetings at the Urban Design center in downtown Raleigh. Each meeting focuses on bringing in knowledgeable speakers, consultants, and city staff to discuss and debate the future of this important area of our shared community.
Philip Bernard has been been able to drive change from a hopeless feel to a new fresh theme of “building momentum" taking hold on Person Street.
Since the kick-off Partnership meeting the community has seen progress in the Person Street business district - A fall street carvinal was hosted within the Person Street business district by neighborhood volunteers to support local businesses and generate positive attention.
- A vacant boarded-up store front was cleaned-up and remodeled by volunteers in the neighborhood.
- Elected officials proposed funding for a Blount/Person Corridor Study.
- Approximately 15 business and property owners, stakeholder reps, and neighbors joined David Diaz, President and CEO of downtown Raleigh Alliance (DRA) for a walking tour of the Person Street business district.
- Brought forward community interest in a new R line stop on Peace Street at Krispy Kreme.
- Successfully engaged with City staff to keep our community informed on the status of traffic and planning projects associated with Person Street and suggest ways the partnership can help in their planning efforts.
- PieBird Restaurant Opening
Philip Bernard is no stranger to the community and isn't afraid to leverage assets within his city to build momentum. - Former Mordecai CAC Chair
- Current Mordecai CAC Traffic Chair
- Successfully drafted volunteers from the neighborhood to build the Person Street Partnership. Including, Trisha Hasch from the Urban Design Center, and Sarah Roholt from Historic Mordecai and Naudain Machen from Historic Oakwood.

By Sara Stohler, Historic Oakwood Neighborhood.
Once again, and perhaps more strikingly than ever, Precinct 14 outdid itself. While citywide, the turnout of voters was in the low 20% range, we had about a 30% turnout (counting the early votes, which are not represented in the official turnout #). We had 968 votes on election day and over 100 from our precinct did early voting, so we topped 1,000 and were probably closer to 1,100. Here is a breakdown from the Wake Board of Elections website: Precinct 01-14School Board: Jim Martin 787 = Cynthia Matson 117 Mayor: Nancy McFarlane 792 = Billie Redmond 126 City Council: Eugene Weeks 584 (total votes cast for this office were 876) City Council At-Large: Russ Stephenson 723 = Fitts 119 = Mary-Ann Baldwin 755 Transportation Bond: 814 Yes, 136 No Housing Bond: 763 Yes, 190 No If you want to look at the data, go to http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/NC/Wake/33016/47158/en/summary.html |

Dear Mr. Sean O’Neal,

On duty police personnel will assist with the parade. Mr. O’Neal has stated he has notified all the residents affected by the closure and there were no objections. Mr. O’Neal you are responsible for providing the barricades necessary to safely block the roadway and for cleaning up any debris immediately following the event. We have received word this week that Progress Energy's tree cutting contractors (Asplundh) are in the Five Points Neighborhood. More than one neighbor from the Five Points area has complained about large trees along the street being excissively trimmed due to power lines. See the photo to the right.
The Mordecai CAC is reaching out to Progress Engery regarding any tree cutting efforts planned within our community and beyond.
We are concerned about our own tree lined streets and making sure tree trimming will be done with care. We will keep you posted as we learn more.
To our knowledge, Progress Energy (Asplundh)trims tree limbs near overhead power lines for your protection and to prevent power outages. Limbs are being removed within a 10 to 20 foot radius around the power lines along the street.

OK, we are close to announcing the 1st Annual Downtown Oktoberfest event on Oct 1st.... We need a few more local dads willing to chip in and help out.. If you havn't heard yet a few local dads where talking about how we all had these great Oktoberfest festivals growing up as kids.... Well, one thing lead to another and we now have a Downtown Oktoberfest planned for our neighbohood on Oct 1st 4pm-9pm between PieBirds and the Pharmacy. - We have a big tent donated. - The BounceRoom people are bringing 8 tables and 100 chairs. - Pie Birds is handing the sausage and sides - Klauses food truck will be out serving pizza for the kids. - Carolina Brewing Company is handling the beer. - You will be able to bring your own 1 liter Beer Stien if you want. - Cafe Prost, the Pretzel bakery out of Wake forest is bringing out the Pretzels - Music on the Porch is handling the music, sound and lights. This is what we really need to sort out now.... - Help at around 2pm transforming the street into Oktobersfest. (basicly setting up tents and tables ) - Help at around 9:30pm transforing the Oktoberfest back into a street. (basicly taking down the tents and tables ) We could also use a few more tables and some help maning the ticket table, but setup and take down are the big tasks where we need some help. If you have any interest in lending a hand, please contact Frank Fee at frankediii@yahoo.com. We will be making an official announcement soon, so we are locked in at this point.. but we figure should be able to round up the help needed to pull this off.. The website is going to be http://www.downtownraleighoktoberfest.com
